Gang of Four Announces 77-81 Box Set

As far as influential bands go, few were as instrumental in what came after them as Leeds’ own Gang of Four. The band in its original incarnation broke boundaries with their influential post punk sounds, while continuously breaking the mold of what music could be. Now the band’s early releases and more are coming with a new box set Gang of Four: 77-81. Containing Entertainment! and Solid Gold as well as a Singles LP and a Double LP, there’s also a cassette with never before heard tracks and a 100 page book accompanied by a live album never officially released Live at American Indian Center 1980.

Above is footage from the Live at American Indian Center 1980 release. The song performed is “He’d Send In The Army” that shows just a snippet in the band’s revolutionary sound as well as their remarkably different live sets from the era.

Both Entertainment! and Solid Gold have been remastered from the original analog tapes. The included cassette has 26 never before issued outtakes. The hardbound book not only includes never before seen photos, but it archives the band’s history from that era. It also includes contributions from the surviving members, flyers, posters and for the first time, the lyrics to the band’s songs.

The Gang of Four: 77-81 box set is available to preorder directly from Matador Records ahead of its December 11 release. The limited edition work also includes two new badges as well. Merchandise for the band is also available here.
