It’s definitely obvious to anyone paying attention that The Flaming Lips are innovators. Everything from the music they make to how their live shows go, the band is always ahead of everyone else. While their new album American Head is arguably their best in recent years, the video for their song “Assassins of Youth” is just as revolutionary. In the live video, the audience and the band are both encased in bubbles, taking a live performance to a new height and creating a safe experience.
The video features a live set in Oklahoma City where not only the band performed in bubbles, but those in attendance where in them as well. The song offers this quick then slow pace that opens up the band’s sound while delivering an endearing tone. The music within goes from trippy aesthetic to bouncing jam. There’s a lot to the song that works on multiple levels while the live footage makes one wonder if this will be how we’ll experience the band during the pandemic.
The video can be streamed above. The song and the album are ready to stream on all platforms or to purchase from all digital outlets. American Head can be purchased physically and in bundles from Warner Records. The Flaming Lips will be on tour beginning at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA on January 25 until August 20 in Las Vegas, NV at Psycho Las Vegas. Their complete tour schedule is available here.
