Sharon Van Etten is on a singles roll of sorts. Since her last release Remind Me Tomorrow she’s released multiple singles that really open up her sound while still keeping her core in tact. So it shouldn’t be a shock to longtime fans and casual ones that she has two new holiday covers out. The renditions of “Silent Night” and “Blue Christmas” offer even more depth than the original versions while the New York artist places her stamp on both.
On “Silent Night” Van Etten offers a new way to experience the song. With multiple vocal tracks placed upon one another, there’s a weighted tone that floats above the organ driven notes. Encapsulating multiple sounds at one time, the version of the song definitely forces you to hear her in a different way. With “Blue Christmas” she takes to the guitar while handing you a more airy vocal. Tender while holding melody, this version has an angelic tone that’s difficult to walk away from without admiration.
Both songs can be streamed above or wherever you stream music. They’re also available in all digital outlets including Bandcamp via Jagjaguwar Records. Sharon Van Etten is set to tour beginning July 08 through 16 at Ottawa Bluesfest in Ottawa, Canada until September 26 in Dan Point, CA at Ohana Festival. Her complete tour schedule is available here.
