Few artists dare to attempt or even think of covering the layered sounds of Steely Dan. The hearty production behind their songs makes tackling their sounds a tough endeavor. However Bill Callahan and Bonnie “Prince” Billy aren’t typical artists nor do they fear covering the band’s music. Their latest cover is just that with help from Bill MacKay they take on and deliver the goods with their take on “Deacon Blues.”
The guitar tones emanate from the jump, offering plenty of heft to get things started. As Callahan’s voice begins to ring out the sway of the original remains. There’s plenty of playing here that helps the backing vocals to lift up, while the artists create a blend that’s as equally charged as the original while making this version their own. When the keys become prevalent it’s obvious that this version stands up with the original.
