For a good while, M. Ward has released some of the most cinematic music available. Mixing his hearty vocals with a well placed melody, his knowledge of arrangements alone places him on a short list of enigmatic artists. So it only makes sense that he’d release an album of Billie Holiday covers as he’s one of the few artists around who gets how to transfer them to fit within is universe. While that album Think Of Spring won’t be available until December, his new single “You’ve Changed” evokes a mix of his sound and Holiday’s essence in one shot.
The song opens with a meandering acoustic that emotes much of the style employed here. Ward isn’t feigning anything here, it’s obvious that he adores the music enough to give it justice. The jazz infused style of the guitar mixed with his breathy vocals give the song a heft that’s on the original while offering a tone that stands on its own. This interpretation is new, it’s not a copy of a copy but rather a new way to hear the music overall.
“You’ve Changed” can be heard above or on all streaming sites. Think Of Spring is available to preorder directly from Anti Records ahead of its December 11 release. M. Ward will perform an album release livestream on December 11 as well. Tickets are available here.
