Jeff Rosenstock has become the king of the New Year’s drop. First with his album POST, the New York artist has figured out how to be a first in getting music out in new ways. While we thought his last single with Laura Stevenson was his last for his continual release 2020 DUMP, he’s since revealed a new single that hits perfectly. On “Illegal Fireworks and Hiding Bottles in The Sand” Rosenstock offers a new sound without abandoning his indie rock world.
With thunderous drums and a squealing guitar, Rosenstock heads into a pedal bathed sound that touches on shoegaze. The vocals are mixed within the music as he sings, yet they’re still differentiated enough to hear them. The music has a moderate stride, yet the distorted guitars don’t deter from his sound. Even with a breakdown point, the song still sounds like Rosenstock, just reconfigured to a degree. It’s different but it works in many ways.
The song can be heard above or on Bandcamp. It’s also available to purchase on the platform as a digital single or with his album 2020 DUMP.
