Bill Callahan and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy are seemingly trying to keep the proliferation going. Dropping new cover songs each week, the pair have also tapped fellow artists to feature on each track while delivering some wonderful music at the same time. On their latest offering they tap Cory Hanson to brilliantly cover Jerry Jeff Walker’s track “Night Rider’s Lament.”
The twang is as key here as the vocal harmonies. The southern charms and almost cowboy sways work well with Callahan’s baritone. Offering that weathered tone before the backing vocals come in with a pedal steel to compliment, there’s a swagger to this cover. It displays the abilities of the artists without steering from making the song their own. The country undertones are still here yet there’s also a nice singer songwriter touch that keeps you intrigued.
“Night Rider’s Lament” can be heard above or wherever you stream music. It can also be purchased in all digital outlets or directly from Drag City Records.
