Brooklyn’s Mat Weitman isn’t a household name just yet. That’s how it goes in music, though we feel like once you hear his new project Hotels On Mars, he may get regular rotation at your home. With a new album Grief Museum announced for release in early February, his lead single “The Worst Year On Record” offers a sound that should draw your attention from beginning to end.
The song opens with the tone that is enigmatic of the style in which the music of George Harrison was crafted. With this tremolo heavy guitar and twangy under notes, the vocals come in with a folk based demeanor that glues the two together. There’s a mixture of introspection and outer emotions that blend together in creating this sound that’s larger and more open ended. The anguish of 2020 is felt in the words and especially in the structure of the music, but it works and draws you in with each note.
The song can be heard above or on all streaming sites. Grief Museum is available for preorder directly from Styles Upon Styles ahead of its February 12 release. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go towards South Brooklyn Mutual Aid. You can also donate to them directly here.
