The boombox recording has served John Darnielle well. After being used to launch his career he turned to it in the pandemic to release the Mountain Goats album Songs for Pierre Chuvin. The surprise release took everyone by storm as it was a gentle reminder of the simple facets of the band’s sound. Now it’s coming to CD and vinyl in March.

Available on compact disc as well as two vinyl variants, the album is a must have for those who couldn’t grab one of the low pressings of cassettes that were offered. The peak vinyl is in a pink swirl variant while the regular version is on a traditional black colorway.
Songs for Pierre Chuvin can be preordered directly from Merge Records before it drops physically on March 26. It’s also available in all digital outlets or on all streaming sites. Mountain Goats are on tour beginning June 18 at Kessler Theater in Dallas, TX until August 26 at Royal Oak Music Theatre in Royal Oak, MI. Their tour dates can be found here.
