On their path of continuous cover songs, Bill Callahan and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy have covered a lot of ground. They’ve also tapped plenty of artists to feature with them in these endeavors, this time with David Grubbs. Their latest single, a cover of the Leonard and Adam Cohen “The Night of Santiago” has the two at their best while the attached video is fittingly on par with the song’s aura.
The minimalism of Grubb helps move along the sounds as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy sings lead and Callahan slides in from measure to measure. The phrasing of the song is completed with hand claps as a beat and the vocals take center stage. While the energy ticks up as the song plays out, it really just gets better with each note. The video has Billy singing into the camera as Callahan is in a bubble on the top of the screen, much like an interpreter for some kind of speech.
You can watch the video above or on YouTube. The song is ready to stream on all streaming services or to purchase in all digital outlets. It can also be purchased digitally directly from Drag City Records.
