Sean Tillman is an artist who is constantly reinventing himself. Under his stage name Har Mar Superstar he’s always delivered songs bathed in the essence of pop and mired in what some of us remember as what pop music used to be. With a new album Roseville announced for release in March, Tillman has shared two new songs right off the bat, both of which carry an exhilarating tone.
For the track “Where We Began,” there’s a soul based R&B tinge to the song. Full of swagger the vocals come in to meet the funky guitar and the full brass section. The mixture of piano and the backing instruments take you back to an almost Burt Bacharach era of sound. The grand notes and the hearty arrangements work so well here that it exemplifies the work that Har Mar has released so far.
On “Sleight of Hand” he reverts to a drum machine with swirls of sound. There’s brass here as well as what could be live drums as the song silky and smooth rolls along under a groove that’s moderate in pace yet full of punch. Reminding you of a mix of some of what his past sounded like, the over the top production works well here and takes you back in more ways than one.
Both songs are ready to stream above or on all streaming sites. Roseville can be preordered directly from Bandcamp on various formats or digitally from all online music stores.
