Aside from the recent Grammy nomination, it’s always been easy to see why Freddie Gibbs is such an influential rapper. Taking gritty times in the streets and making hypnotic rhymes from that narrative, the idea that his style has been called old school by some is laughable. On his new single “Gang Signs” he taps Schoolboy Q along for the ride, and its video featuring animation from Gabriel Alcala is just as on point as the track.
The track hits immediately, offering Gibbs’ vocal style at the top of the mix. The rhymes come fast and come hard. The keys and funky tones underneath hold well between brass and the beat. However as impressive as the track plays out between the two rappers, it’s the video that is wild. Featuring Gibbs as a rabbit rolling through the streets among other animals and the cops, the imagery shouldn’t be lost on anyone.
