For a minute now Japan’s CHAI has offered up more than enough quality music. Now part of the Sub Pop Records family, they have a new album WINK coming in May that should keep fans of the band on their toes. With their new single “Maybe Chocolate Chips” they tap Ric Wilson to feature on the track while offering up a smoother version of their music in the process.
The song has a more chillwave meets R&B feel to it. Still essentially pop, there’s a new tone here from the foursome. The vocals are more group involved before Wilson comes in and offers bars to heighten the song’s tone. The beat and the synths have a nineties R&B feel while Wilson helps strip away some of the pop sounds with just his rhymes. The video features a cut and past animation mixed with video from each member as well as Wilson alongside imagery of chocolate chip cookies.
The video is viewable above or on YouTube. The song is available to stream on all platforms. WINK can be preordered from Sub Pop Records ahead of its May 21 release date. CHAI will perform via livestream at Bandsintown Plus on March 12 and they will appear on March 13 in Toyoma Prefecture at Nano City Fukuno Cultural Creation Center Amphitheater Helios. They will also be at Parc de Champagne in Reims, France on June 26.
