In the sub genres of ambient music, dark ambient is the most intriguing of them. In the world of ambient music in general, few artists are as revered as Australian born and Brighton based artist Penelope Trappes. The artist’s music is essential in its form while it offers tonal qualities that sound like rare earth materials. While Trappes is announcing the third installment Penelope Three in her trilogy of full lengths, the lead single “Nervous” and its accompanying video should shock you to your core with its decayed and astral tones.
The song opens with stark sounds that almost rumble at the core. Trappes’ vocals come in with an honesty while staying dispersed from the music. The beat is hearty while a piano carries the track. The tension in the music is hard to walk away from where the build of instrumentation reveals dark moments throughout. However Trappes’ vocals lift the song from the darker moments within the song. The video offers Trappes in a black gown and at times accompanied by two others donning black, almost in a funeral processional way. The dark imagery in the clip deliver the song with its hypnotic tones and heavier weight. The unknown here is the it factor in the music and the video.
The video is ready to view above or on YouTube. The song can be heard on all streaming sites. Penelope Three is available for preorder from Houndstooth ahead of its May 28 release.
