It’s hard to believe that the second album epic by Sharon Van Etten has hit the ten year mark. The occasion however isn’t going unnoticed as Van Etten will release the album as a double album for the anniversary titled epic Ten. The release will see the original album with a bonus of covers by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple, Courtney Barnett featuring Vagabon, Big Red Machine and more. Available digitally in April alongside a livestream concert benefiting Zebulon alongside a short documentary about the making of the album. Below is the Big Red Machine cover of “A Crime” taken from the album.
The cover has a real swagger in how it plays out. With the vocals having a dual sound, the sway of the song gets ticked up a bit while the power of the song remains. The guitars really work in this style, offering a mix between acoustic and electric tones. There’s a lot here between how the vocals fall and how the instrumentation lends itself to a new interpretation of the song itself. However it works and delivers plenty of sounds that stay with you as the song plays out while paying homage to the original with plenty of authenticity.
The cover can be heard above or on all streaming sites. the digital version of epic Ten will be available April 16 and the vinyl or compact discs can be preordered from Ba Da Bing! before its June 11 release. Sharon Van Etten will perform via livestream from Zebulon in Los Angeles, CA on April 16 and 17, with all proceeds going to the venue.
