Sharon Van Etten is quickly closing in on the reissue of her album epic. Titled epic Ten, the tenth anniversary edition is a double release that also features covers of her songs by IDLES, Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple and more. Bringing up the “more” factor is the newly released cover of “Don’t Do It” from Courtney Barnett and Vagabon. What the two artists bring to the cover is a graceful embrace of the song while adding their own touches as well.
The song gets going from the jump with Barnett as the lead vocal. Mixed above the guitar and drums, Barnett delivers the words with a presence that’s unmatched before Vagabon adds an accompanying vocal that blends perfectly. The way the two work together on vocals creates a stirring sound that adds to the version of the song without taking away from the original. Barnett’s guitar has a nice snarl to it that grinds a bit above the drums though the two artists’ vocals is the main focus here and it’s a nice place to center your ears on. The two mold together louder for the final verse, giving the song more heft than you may expect.
The cover can be heard above or wherever you stream music. The tenth anniversary double album version of epic Ten can be preordered physically from Ba Da Bing! Records before its April 16 release. Sharon Van Etten is set to perform via live-stream on April 16 & 17 benefiting Zebulon.
