King Gizzard Delivers Happy Sounding New Album

For most bands, releasing a new album, especially your eighteenth release is a big deal. However for Melbourne’s prolific King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard it just feels like the norm. The band kept their lips sealed for the most part on what Butterfly 3000 would be but now you can hear that the record recorded in the members’ respective homes during the pandemic is a happy and joyous release. Steering from their prog psych past, the Australian group finds another genre to take a swing at an conquer as well.

The entirety of the album is made up of synth programs and MIDI based notes. What that means is that it’s yet another sounds from the diverse group. However it steers from a possible Hawkwind sound and veers more toward a Neu! or even any eighties pop group one. This isn’t a bad thing by any means as the happy music here is still excellent and proves the band can do whatever they want. The opener “Yours” makes the case for this. The delicate notes sew together a fabric of upbeat and sparkled sounds that meet with falsetto vocals. The way the band embraces the sounds while still adding arranged balance offers the band up in a new way full of well crafted sounds. “Dreams” keeps the hooks flowing, descending into an abyss of head bopping eloquence. The catchy words creep into your head before you find yourself singing along.

Where “Blue Morpho” dives deep into this synthesized world of the band’s creation, songs like “Catching Smoke” and “2.02 Killer Year’ embrace the format and take your ears on a ride that seems effortless and uplifting. In fact, the whole album is an expansive ride that’s hard to steer away from. But with that our favorite song came on “Black Hot Soup.” The melody here has a real chip tune tone as the vocals dance between the beat and the ever-growing track building. The falsetto vocals give the music space to breathe and keep the hooks in your head as the upbeat pace keeps the happiness flowing. If this is King Gizzard in a pandemic, we say keep the interesting compositions coming but under better circumstances.

Butterfly 3000 is available to purchase directly from KGLW Records. It’s also available to stream on all streaming sites or to purchase from all online music retailers.
