Car Seat Headrest Shares Covers E.P. & Remixes E.P.

Last year when Car Seat Headrest delivered their album Making A Door Less Open or MADLO for short, they revealed a new direction in sound. The band had reached a place where they were more comfortable embracing a sound that had new instrumentation while still honoring their indie rock past. While the release signaled a new era for the band, that’s not where the release stops. Today the band has released two digital EP’s to bookend the album. The first MADLO: Influences features cover songs of artists that influenced the album’s sound while the second MADLO: Remixes features remixed versions of some of the songs from it.

With MADLO: Influences we get to hear four songs by David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Kate Bush and The Who. All of these acts makes perfect sense when figuring the album’s overall sound. An eclectic group of artists for an eclectic group of songs. While the band’s take on “Golden Years” by David Bowie is a bit slower and engaging, their cover of “Substitute” by The Who has all of the energy of the original. Also choosing “March of the Pigs” from Nine Inch Nails from The Downward Spiral makes for an interesting selection. However their take on the Kate Bush track “Running Up That Hill” steals the release. The way the song is composed allows for the vocals to take center stage where the lyrics are front and center. All of the songs make for a varied mix yet this track is definitely a killer version of the Hounds of Love classic.

For MADLO: Remixes the band employs remixes from the likes of Superorganism, Scuba, yeule, Dritel and 1 Trait Danger. Just as eclectic of a coupling of artists remixing the songs as the songs themselves. 1Trait Danger being the side project of the band’s drummer Andrew Kats and Will Toledo’s alternate persona Trait. On the remixes the opener comes with a remix by London’s Superorganism. The band reworks the catchy song with added vocals that expand the song from the upbeat indie rock gem to a more house based sound. Though the additional vocals really open the song up with new melodies and depth. “Martin” gets remixed again by 1 Trait Danger to really take the song to a new space. With horns and a new approach in how the vocals sound, the version here is a whole new version of the song that takes you to another place. While the Scuba remix of “Weightlifters” adds to the song’s ambiance and the yeule remix of “Deadlines” has its own ethos in how the song is reworked, the Dntel remix of “Life Worth Missing” is a gem. Reconstructing the opening to a more ambient darkness, the reimagined and shortened opening works to get things going. By speeding things up a tick or two also gets your head bopping as things change without executing the core of the original.

Both EP’s can be heard above or wherever you stream music. They can also be purchased wherever you download music via Matador Records. The original album Making A Door Less Open is available directly from Matador Records on various formats.
