For the years after The Gloria Record and Mineral, Chris Simpson performed under the name Zookeeper. Those songs unveiled a new sound that felt like a party was always going on. Since changing his moniker to Mountain Time, Simpson has honed elements of that sound into a well crafted beast on his latest album Music For Looking Animals. Now he’s ready to unveil Saint Francis, Zookeeper a new repressing of the first two Zookeeper albums plus three unreleased songs. While the album will be available in late August, the lead single “Neon Heart” exhibits Simpson’s stellar song craft.
The song opens with a deep piano tone that immediately grabs your attention. When Simpson’s tender vocals come in you should already be hooked. The song has a depth in the honest words and melodic tones. There’s an honesty in the vocals that has a fragility to it that you can’t unhear. It adds to the weight of the song without weighing it down. The longstanding note that plays along with the single gives a balance for Simpson’s voice to rest upon without deterrence. The song doesn’t get quick, yet it slowly tells its tale while holding your ears to the end.
“Neon Heart” can be heard above or on all streaming platforms. Saint Francis, Zookeeper is available for preorder directly from Spartan Records ahead of its August 27 release date.
