Yola Impresses on New Solo Album

Yola is definitely an artist we’ve kept an eye on. Ever since she got on Easy Eye Sound we’ve kept our peepers on whatever the singer songwriter has done while keeping our ears on the ground for what she would have coming next. So when we heard that her album Stand For Myself was coming, we were nothing if not excited. What she’s given us is more than we could ask for. The album holds so much power and so much heart that it’s almost impossible to steer from, it’s definitely a contender for album of the year.

The opening track “Barely Alive” definitely gets things going. Singing between the soulful notes, Yola takes her time to let us know that we aren’t alone in this world. While she sways off on “Dancing Away In Tears” towards a more disco touched sound, she doesn’t alienate the fan be it a casual one or a new one. She makes up for all of that lead in with “Diamond Studded Shoes.” The song hits all points and gives you a reason to feel alive. Between the happy go lucky notes and well arranged music, Yola finds a way to shimmer here. Where she rises to the moment on “Starlight” it doesn’t hit as heavy as “If I Had To Do It All Again.” Here the singer songwriter takes us on a journey without having to leave wherever we’re experiencing the album. While we loved songs like “Now You’re Here” and “Break The Bough” we really loved “Whatever You Want.” With a country gaze and an easy going pacing, Yola stretches out and takes a shot at a new genre and it pays off in multitudes. The easy going demeanor of the singer songwriter is present, she’s ready to stand for herself and we should all be ready for it.

Stand For Myself can be purchased directly from Easy Eye Sound on multiple formats. It can be purchased as well in all digital outlets or streamed from all streaming sites. Yola is on tour starting August 04 at Moment House live-streamed until April 23 in Lexington, KY at Kroger Field. Her complete tour dates can be accessed here.
