For many acts, the art of being isn’t enough and they have to follow up whatever they did prior with something extraordinary. As far artists like Mitski, whatever they post must be amazing as their last album Be the Cowboy was so widely praised as brilliant. With a new album titled Laurel Hell, the artist is back with a new song “The Only Heartbreaker” and it hits with an intensity.

The soft touched drums that open things up are met by her upbeat vocals. The way she sings towards something grander makes for an intriging sound. The mystery behind her strong vocals play out with an intensity that hits perfectly. There’s a sound here that doesn’t really exist anywhere else while an intensity thrives underneath. There’s moments where the song feels natural where there’s other times where it feels like it’s coming from somewhere else. The passionate words spell out for a sound that echoes from the past while it outlives itself in leaps and bounds.
